Your little girl has been asking for a kitten ever since her friend down the street got one and you’ve come to the point where it’s getting hard to resist her pleading little eyes. So you give in quite easily and take her down to the pet store, because let’s face it, you had always wanted a kitten when you were smaller as well. Before you actually go and get your kitten however, you might first want to consider what type of kitten you want. Sure they all look adorable with their big eyes when they’re still very young, but you have to realize that they’ll grow one day and you will have to live with your choice. And don’t forget that you’ll need to give the kitten care and love for a long time to come.

Before taking any kind of pet into a home, the prospective owners must be sure they are willing to accept full responsibility for the care and well-being of the animal. Although cats are less demanding than some other kinds of pets, they do need attention and care.

Choice: Purebred or Domestic?

The old term “alley cat” has been replaced with the term “domestic cat.” Domestic cats may be either long-haired or short-haired. Short-haired domestics are the most common types. Among the short hairs, the “tiger-striped” cats are prominent.

Persons who wish to breed cats for profit or to whom appearances and status are important should choose a purebred cat. The animal should be obtained directly from breeders, who should supply pedigree and registration papers. Purebred cats usually are kept indoors because of their value and the risk of accident or theft. For this reason, most owners prefer the less valuable–and sometimes hardier–domestic, or mixed-breed, cat.

Domestic cats are best obtained from a known neighborhood source where there has been a single litter, where other cats in the household appear healthy, and where the mother’s temperament is known. Many an attractive and healthy cat or kitten has been adopted as a homeless waif from an animal shelter, or pound. Read the rest of this entry »

Kittens may be born at any time of the year. Among wild cats, the time of birth depends upon the kind of cat and the climate of the area. Domestic cats in the tropics may have kittens at different times from those in northern climates. In the United States, most mothers have two litters a year, and kittens are born in the spring or late summer. A domestic cat carries the unborn kittens inside her body for about 65 days. As the time for birth approaches, she hunts for a quiet, safe place to have her kittens. Her owner may supply a cardboard box.

There are many kinds of dogs to choose from. Vital things to take into consideration are your lifestyle, your hobbies and your present and future situation. You have to take into account the distinction between raising a dog from young pup hood and getting it as an adult dog.

Do you want a pet or a show dog or a male or a female dog? What are the benefits in having a small dog? They may not need a large space but small dogs still need room to exercise. Think about whether you would like a crossbreed, or a purebred. Always, carefully check out the breeder or any other place where you are considering getting your new dog.

Many of your friends have pets and they don’t stop talking about them mostly in a positive light.

Or there was a family pet in your home when you were a kid, you have nothing but pleasant memories about the time that you spent with that pet.

So you start thinking that perhaps it is time for you to take care of a pet, it might be fun and at least there will be something to greet you when you drag your tired body in through your door after a hard days labor.

No doubt about it, taking care of a pet does have many benefits. You will receive plenty of companionship, affection and even devotion from a well-loved pet. And many studies have concluded that pets can be of great advantage to our health, stroking a pet releases endorphins which act in the brain to make us happier, less stressed and more positive. On top of which, pets that need exercising help us to stay healthier.
