Many of your friends have pets and they don’t stop talking about them mostly in a positive light.

Or there was a family pet in your home when you were a kid, you have nothing but pleasant memories about the time that you spent with that pet.

So you start thinking that perhaps it is time for you to take care of a pet, it might be fun and at least there will be something to greet you when you drag your tired body in through your door after a hard days labor.

Getting a new dog is a great joy for anyone. They bring to the family unconditional love and a zest for life. In fact, many grow to be as close as any other family member. It’s important to remember, however, that getting a new dog is a huge responsibility. Any good dog owner will take the proper steps to ensure that their new dog will live a long, happy life.

Coming home is the most exciting and challenging part of getting a new dog. Both the dog and you are adapting to a new environment, and there is much work to be done. Make sure your new baby has a warm, dry place to sleep and play. There are a wide assortment of beds and toys to choose from in making your dog’s personal space. Consider getting some pee pads even if your dog is an adult rescue. In a new place some dogs like to mark things, so it’s best to be prepared.

Remember to cover the basic safety essentials like immunizations, ID tags or licenses. It’s very important to get your dog spayed or neutered as soon as possible to avoid making more puppies or other unwanted behavior. Many states and cities require some form of license to own a dog, so be sure you’re compliant with all laws. Also, implantable microchips are now available to help if your dog gets lost.

Although you may think all pet food manufacturers have your pet’s best interests in mind, this is not always the case. Current pet food regulations allow manufacturers to use ingredients that you would never knowingly give to your pet. In fact, you may be shocked to learn what some brands of pet food really contain. For example: the use of by-products (feet, bones and intestines, etc.), chemical preservatives (BHA and BHT) and grains that are often difficult to digest (corn, wheat, gluten and soy), which are often used as a protein source instead of meat.
